Vol. 6
In the days that follow, Lil shifts between consciousness and unconsciousness. In the moments Lil is awake, she tries to get her bearings, but it’s difficult due to her weakened body. Her fights with Ed don’t help the matter. Lil herself feels betrayed by Ed for being the Admiral, while Ed still deals with the hurt of being abandoned in a life threatening situation by Lil. That’s the reason why most of the treatment of Lil’s injury will be done by a second doctor, Levi Grits.
After a second failed attempt to escape, Levi eventually takes the time to show Lil what Ed has done for her recovery and in what kind of state her body currently resides. It comes as a big shock to Lil to learn that, under normal circumstances, she should have died; it’s safe to say this was an eye-opening moment for her.
When Lil’s condition improves a bit, she has some more freedom to explore Ed’s mansion. Only one thing is on her mind: how can she save her crew from the prison of Gualthiero? She eventually plans to break them free, but needs blueprints of the prison to do so, so by going around the mansion, she hopes to get her hands on some. It was then that she found herself in another encounter with Ed. After the first tension leaves the room, Ed and Lil actually have a proper discussion. Lil starts to understand Ed’s hurt, that even though his injuries have healed, his mental scars are very much open. That same evening, Ed brings Lil a peace offering in the form of some meat. During this late snack, Lil lays down her plans to save her crew, and to her surprise, Ed immediately tells her he’s onboard with this plan. From that day on, they start to plan the prison break together.
A week passes, and Lil is finally fit enough to take a look downtown, trying to get a feel for the routes of the city. This enables an unexpected encounter with Cesar, whom Lil thought to be also imprisoned. Cesar has been hard at work to help the crew and got his hands on identification certificates from Viscount Noirmont himself; those certificates should be enough to free Lil’s original crew. Throughout the rest of their conversation, it becomes clear that Cesar isn’t ready to let Lil go, but sadly for Cesar, it isn’t the same for her. In Lil’s mind, their relationship came to an end for a very good reason. She doesn’t feel the need to open old wounds and fall back into old patterns that have proven to end in disaster. This leaves Cesar heartbroken.
Unbeknownst to everyone, Lil’s brother, Venua, has rented a villa in Roahn, secretly searching for Lil. As a witness, he brings in the dressmaker, who had been summoned by Ed a few weeks ago, to tell them about Ed’s ‘mistress’ and if this mistress could be Lil.
One morning, Lil finds herself in Ed’s bedroom. There, her eye falls on the small portrait that Ed has been given by the Duke of Mirielle. It’s a painting of Lil herself with some small writing on the back suggesting that Ed was hired by Mirielle to find Lil and to hand her over to him. When Ed finally walks in, a huge fight breaks out. Lil feels betrayed, again, by Ed. The shock of this betrayal leads to Lil’s health deteriorating, and she collapses. Ed is heartbroken; he even confessed his love for Lil, but it wasn’t enough for Lil to hear him out. His biggest fear comes through; Lil leaves the mansion and rents a room in a small inn.
Despite everything that has happened. Lil is still determined to break free her crew. The morning after the whole ordeal, Lil walks the streets of Roahn and finds herself in the presence of a very haggardly looking Commodore Sagastar. The guilt on Sagastar’s shoulders was too much to bear, and in the weeks after their landing, he started to drink his sorrows away. Lil and the Commodore met in a small bar where Lil asked him for a favour. She explains that she’s in possession of identification certificates and wants to use Sagastar’s influence and authority to help her free her crew. Ed eventually joins this conversation, and Sagastar accepts Lil’s request.
At the end of this volume, Lil recognises that she still needs Ed’s help and decides to temporarily bury the hatchet to make the jailbreak work.
